Multiply by 10,000. A centimetre is 10 mm and each millimetre is 1,000 µm.
So 0.5 cm is 5,000 µm, and a red blood cell, about 0.0008 cm across, is 8 µm.
Micrometres are often called microns, especially on filter and paper specs. Same unit, older name.
