The Somoni replaced the Tajikistani Ruble in 2000 at a rate of 1 Somoni = 1000 Rubles. The currency is divided into 100 Dirams to one Somoni. Dirma banknotes were first introduced in October 2000 and followed a year later by coins. This was the first time that coins had been circulated in Tajikistan.
