Worldwide use:

The Honduran Lempira is the official currency of Honduras. One Honduran Lempira is divided into 100 Centavos. Coins are distributed in 5, 10, 20 and 50 Centavos and banknotes come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Honduran Lempira.

The name 'Lempira' comes from 'cacique Lempira,' a 16th century ruler of the Lenca people. Infamous for his fights against the Spanish soldiers, he is considered a national hero and features on the 1 Lempira banknote as well as the 20 and 50 Centavos coins.

The official currency of Honduras until 1862 was the Honduran Real. After 1862, the Honduran Peso was introduced with 1 Peso equal to 8 Reales. In 1871, the currency transferred to a decimal subdivision with one Peso equaling 100 Centavos. In 1931, the Honduran Lempira replaced the Peso at par.
