Description:
The Chilean Peso is used in Chile. One Chilean Peso is worth 100 Centavos but no Centavos coins remain in circulation as inflation rendered them obsolete. Banknotes are available in 1000, 2000, 5000 and 20000 Pesos. Coins are issued in 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Pesos. However, Chile is running out of 1 Peso coins and 5 and 10 Peso coins are also very rare.
Today’s Chilean Peso banknotes all differ in size. Whilst the height is a standard 70mm (2.76in), the lengths range from 121mm - 148mm (4.76 - 5.82in).
Origin:
The Chilean Peso was first launched in 1817 to replace the Spanish Reale with one Peso being equal to 8 Spanish Reales. However, in 1960, the Peso was removed and the Escudo introduced at a rate of 1000 Chilean Pesos to one Escudo. This new currency remained in force until 1975 when the Chilean Peso was brought back at a rate of one Peso to 1000 Escudos, or 1 million old Pesos.
