Bahraini dinar

Worldwide use:

Description:

The official currency of Bahrain is the Bahraini Dinar. A Dinar comprises of 1000 Fils. Coins are available in 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 Fils and ½ Bahraini Dinar. Banknotes come in ½, 1, 5, 10 and 20 Bahraini Dinars. However, Saudi Riyals are also accepted in Bahrain.

"Dinar" comes from the word "denarius" which described a silver coin used by the Romans. Fils coins are made from bronze, cupro-nickel and brass.

Origin:

The Bahraini Dinar originated in 1965. Before that, the Gulf Rupee was in circulation and one Dinar was worth 10 Rupees. Paper banknotes were issued in 1979 and in 2006 the Bahrain Agency was appointed Central Bank of Bahrain. The 500 Fils coin was discontinued in 2011, allegedly as it featured the Pearl monument in its face. This monument was the focal point for anti-government protests and was torn down by the Government in 2011.
