How do I convert grams to ounces?
Divide by 28.35. An avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 g exactly, so 100 g is 3.53 oz and a 250 g pack of butter is 8.82 oz.
Old British recipes use 454 g as the pound, which comes to 16.01 oz – the extra hundredth is rounding, not a bonus.
Precious metals use the troy ounce, about 31.1 g, so don't use this to work out what your gold is worth.
What are grams?
A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, the base unit of mass in the metric system. It was first defined in 1795 as the mass of a cubic centimeter of water at the melting point of ice.
For example, a typical paperclip weighs about one gram, while a small apple may weigh around 100 grams.
To move between metric mass units shift the decimal point: 1,000 milligrams to a gram, 1,000 grams to a kilogram and 1,000 kilograms to a metric ton. Recipes in grams beat recipes in cups – a cup of flour weighs whatever the cook packed into it.
What are ounces?
An ounce is a unit of weight in the imperial system and the US customary system, with one ounce equal to approximately 28.35 grams. Ounces are often used to measure smaller quantities of ingredients in cooking or for measuring the weight of small items like jewelry or postage.
