Definition

The Afghan Afghani is the official currency of Afghanistan, alongside the US Dollar. Afghani coins are available in 1,2 and 5 Afs. Banknotes are in 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 Afgahni. One Afghani is equal to 100 Pul but there are no Pul coins in circulation.

Afghanistan does not hold a stock market. Instead, financial activities are held through money bazaars.

Origin

The original Afghani was established in 1925 and before this the Afghan Rupee was used. When Afghanistan was taken over by the Taliban in 1996, the Afghani was declared worthless. Following the US invasion in 2001 and the formation of the Karzai Government, a new Afghani was introduced in 2002 and circulated in October 2003. The Afghani has appreciated in value and its acceptance has steadily increased.
