There are converters for grams, kilograms, milligrams, metric tons, pounds, stones and more.

The base unit of mass in the metric system is the kilogram (kg), which is about the mass of one liter of water (1,000 cubic centimeters) at 4°C. A gram (g) is one thousandth of a kilogram, close to the mass of one cubic centimeter of water.

A milligram is one thousandth of a gram and a metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms. Each step is a power of ten, so going from kilograms to grams means multiplying by 1,000 – 2.5kg is 2,500g.

Imperial / English weight units are used in the United Kingdom and the United States. The main ones are the ounce, pound, stone and ton, with 16 ounces to the pound. A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.

The stone is 14 pounds, about 6.35 kilograms, and is how people in the United Kingdom and Ireland give their body weight.

Kilogram

The kilogram (kg) is the SI base unit of mass, and the only one with a prefix in its name. From 1889 until 2019 it was the mass of the International Prototype of the Kilogram, a platinum-iridium cylinder kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures near Paris; since 20 May 2019 it has been defined through the Planck constant instead.

A liter of water has a mass of about 1kg, which is no coincidence – the kilogram was originally meant to be the mass of a liter of water. There are 1,000 grams in a kilogram and 1,000 kilograms in a metric ton.

To convert kilograms to pounds you must multiply the value by approximately 2.2.

To convert kilograms to stones you must divide the value by approximately 6.35. In this case it gives you a decimal value for stones which is generally not useful as most people use stones and pounds. If you use our converter this calculation will be done for you.

Pounds

The pound (lb) is the everyday unit of weight in the United States and the United Kingdom, and is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. It is divided into 16 ounces. The symbol comes from libra, the Latin for scales, which is also where the £ sign comes from.

150 pounds is about 68kg and a 5 pound bag of sugar is about 2.27kg. In the United States gym dumbbells are marked in pounds too.

To convert pounds to kilograms you must divide the value by approximately 2.2.

Stones

A stone is 14 pounds, or about 6.35 kilograms, and it is the unit used in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Before it was fixed at 14 pounds in 1835 it varied with the trade and the town.

Both countries still give body weight as stones and pounds – 11 stone 4 is 158 pounds, or about 71.7kg. Everywhere else it is kilograms or pounds.

To convert stones to kilograms you must multiply by a factor of 6.35

Grams

A gram (g) is one thousandth of a kilogram, about the weight of a US dollar bill.

Grams are particularly useful for measuring ingredients in cooking and baking, as well as for determining the weight of small items such as jewelry, coins, or letters. In scientific settings, grams are often used to measure the mass of substances in chemical reactions or the weight of samples in laboratory experiments.

To convert grams to ounces, you must divide by about 28.35.

Ounces

Ounces are a commonly used unit of weight in the imperial system of measurement, with one ounce being equivalent to approximately 28.35 grams. This unit is often used to measure smaller quantities of weight, such as food ingredients in recipes or personal items like jewelry.

To convert ounces to grams, one must multiply by 28.35
