Description:

The Som is the official currency of Uzbekistan. At present the currency comes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 Som coins and banknotes in denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 Som.

The largest Uzbekistani Som banknote in circulation is the 5000 Som note which is worth $2.20 US Dollars at the time of writing. The smallest denomination of the currency, 1 Tiyin, is the world's least valuable coin worth 1/1999 US Cents. 

Origin:

The Russian Ruble was replaced with the Uzbekistan Som on November 15th 1993 at par. The first issue did not have a subunit. On the 1st July 1994 the second Som was introduced at a rate of 1 new Som = 1000 old Som. This new Som is subdivided into 100 Tiyin.
