Description:
On 1st January 2005 a new currency was introduced by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. During the transition period the new Lira was called Yeni Türk Lirasi (New Turkish Lira). The new currency wiped six zeros from the old Lira with 1 new Lira = 1,000,000 old Lira. The currency now comes in denominations of 5kr, 10kr, 25kr, 50kr and 1Lira and banknotes of 5,10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Lira bills.
The new Turkish Lira symbol was introduced on the 1st March 2012 following a nationwide contest. The symbol, designed by Tülay Lale, is composed of the letter L which is shaped like an anchor and embedded with a double striped letter T set at an angle of 20 degrees. The Prime Minister at the time explained that the symbol conveys the currency as a safe harbor and represented the rising prestige of the Turkish nation.
Origin:
After the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1467, the Turkish State Mint was founded and the first gold coins were minted. The Ottaman Lira remained in circulation until the end of 1927 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
