Description:
On 3rd October 1958 banknotes were introduced by the Central Bank of Tunisia in denominations of ½, 1 and 5 Dinars. Today, notes also come in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 Dinars and coins in 20, 50, 100 and 200 Milim and ½, 1, 2 and 5 Dinars.
In Tunisia is a criminal offense to import or export Tunisian Dinars. Tourists must declare any cash in their possession exceeding the value of £500 before leaving Tunisia.
Origin:
The Dinar replaced the French Franc as the unit of currency in 1958 at a rate of 1000 Francs = 1 Dinar. The word Dinar dates back to the early Islamic gold dinar coin, relating to the Byzantine Denarius Auri.
