Saint Helena pound

Worldwide use:

Description:

The St. Helena Pound is pegged to the British pound at par. They come in denominations of £5, £10 and £20 pound notes, with the £1 note only being withdrawn in 2004. The coinage comes in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Pence, along with £1 and £2 coins.

The South African Pound was legal currency on St. Helena until 1961. This stopped when the new decimal South African Rand was introduced.

Origin:

St Helena has been issuing its own notes since around 1716 in the form of Shillings and Pounds. Alongside this, British Pounds Sterling were also in circulation and up to 1961 the South African Pound, which was equal to the British Pound, was also accepted. This only ceased with the introduction of the new decimal South African Rand. In 1976 the St. Helena government began issuing new, decimal denominated banknotes and in 1984 it also distributed its own coinage which was similar to the UK currency but with different designs on the reverse.
