Liberian dollar

Worldwide use:

Description:

The Liberian Dollar is the official currency of Liberia. One Liberian Dollar is made up of 100 Cents. Coins are issued in 5, 10, 25 and 50 Cents as well as 1 Dollar. Banknotes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Liberian Dollars.

A currency shortage in 1980 lead to the introduction of a $5 coin. The 7 sided coin was very similar in size and weight to the $1 coin which caused confusion and short changing activity.

Origin:

The first Liberian Dollar was introduced in 1847 and remained the official currency of Liberia until 1907 when it was replaced by the British West African Pound. In 1935, US Dollars were circulated and in 1943 the Liberian Dollar was made the official currency of Liberia once again.
